Our History

In 1944 a group of women, appalled by the lack of animal welfare in the Wayne County area, started Animal Welfare League. The first official shelter was on Cart Road. In the 1960's the shelter moved to Chester Blvd within the city limits. In the decades to follow Animal Welfare League teamed up with Wayne County and the City of Richmond to help with their stray population.

In 2024 we are endeavoring to become a private shelter once again. We hope with the changes we make that our shelter will make it another 80 years.

Our Mission:

Animal Welfare League is committed to helping lost, abandoned, and abused animals and helping them find their forever homes.

Motto:

Animals First!

Core Values:

1. The wellness and safety of all animals in our care.

2. To find the best possible fit our animals and their new families.
